However, there are two records coming out that I played a part in. One project, a great Brazilian jazz album by my friend Laura Dreyer, will be out in the fall; I played on eight tracks. The other, to which I contributed one track, is an album by my singer-songwriter friend Markeisha Ensley.

I do have two projects of my own that I plan to eventually record. One is my jazz quintet with trumpet player Alex Norris and guitarist Tom Guarna, and the other is a new album of songs with lyrics. (This will probably be years in the making.)

And we’ll be spending the summer at home in NYC. As you might know, we’ve been in Winnipeg, Canada for the past two school years, but our Canadian experiment is about to draw to a close (it’s darn cold up here)! In August, we will be moving to Portland, Oregon, as George will be an assistant professor of jazz studies there. I have never been to Portland, but I have heard wonderful things about it, and it’s convenient to Seattle, Vancouver and San Francisco. So maybe we will catch you at shows on the West Coast.

A record label promised to release it in January 2010, then April, then on June 15. I was very excited about this, and I paid for a publicity campaign and booked some shows in support of the album.

I have now received an E-mail from the label saying that my CD release has been cancelled. Now I’m in the process of waiting to get my master back so that I can release the album some other way. At any rate, I hope you will soon be able to enjoy “Blue in Blue.”

I studied with Charlie for years and he was a magnificent person and teacher - sometimes the only inspiration I had. The last contact I had with him was an inspiring letter he wrote me in January after I sent him my latest recording. Thousands of musicians are going to miss him.
